Learning and Growing Together

Co-op families speak about the school:

“The co-op provides the perfect mix of learning and allowing a child to be a child.”

“I am most pleased with the co-op for providing such a warm, caring and nurturing environment for my children during their first years of learning.”

"The Ridgewood co-op has been a fantastic experience -- not just for my daughter, but for our family as a whole.  The co-op provides a wonderful environment for all of us to make a crucial first step into the classroom."

“By participating regularly in the classroom, I can watch the children interact and form friendships, and see them grow as they learn more each day.”

I am grateful to the co-op for the support, friendliness, and compassion that the staff and other co-op families have for my son and family. I feel like I am part of a very special group of people.”

“The teachers are dedicated, nurturing, capable – all-around wonderful people who made the preschool years so memorable and special for our daughter.  She has graduated from the co-op but still speaks so fondly of her ‘first friends’ at school – her teachers.”

“I love the opportunity that the co-op provides to teach my son about being part of a community.”

PHILOSOPHY

The Cooperative Nursery School of Ridgewood offers a unique and positive preschool experience for children, ages 2 ½ to 5 years. Children learn and play in an environment ideally suited to their needs as developing individuals. Our professional teaching staff guides your child in achieving social, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Our small classes enable our staff to recognize each child as an exceptional and creative individual. Our special attention to the needs of preschoolers provides a warm and caring environment as we encourage independence, self-discipline and a love for school.

THE COOPERATIVE EXPERIENCE

The school is organized by parents, which enables you to actively participate in your child's first school experience.  Enthusiastic parent support is one of the school’s most valuable resources.  Parents gain a fresh perspective on their preschoolers as they share in the learning process.  Children, in turn, gain a wider exposure to a variety of people as their worlds expand.   Parent involvement can be as rewarding for the parents as it is for the children. The cooperative environment is a terrific way to get to know other families through special holiday events, moms’ night out fundraisers, and Dads’ Day.

To participate in the co-op, parents must:

  • Assist as parent helpers in the classroom approximately once or twice a month (childcare is available on-site for younger siblings)
  • Serve on the school’s board or a committee (see “Staff” section for detailed descriptions of board and committee positions)
  • Participate in the Fabulous Fall Festival, the preschool’s largest fundraiser of the school year
  • Assist at one Saturday event during the school year – outdoor cleanup or our annual Book Fair
